EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:
1991 - present
GCS has developed and enhanced its own CONVOY family of message-switching products, mainly based around X.400 access
units. It has also developed a public fax delivery system for an Australian-based company for use by the financial
community when broadcasting newsletters and other documents created in PostScript.
I have total responsibility for all technical aspects of our work. To illustrate the varied responsibilities that
fall to me, the four of the recent projects in which I have been involved are:
Czech Railways, Prague:
Flexifax, Sydney:
BACS, London:
BBS, Oslo:
All of the above have been coded in TAL or C and are currently running on D- or G- releases of the Guardian operating
system.
1984 - 1991
IBT International sold a message-switching product, based on Tandem Non-Stop mainframes called CONVOY. Initially,
the main function concerned proprietary electronic mail and telex, but it was developed as a much more sophisticated
switching medium, comprising fax, X.400 and other reception and delivery mechanisms. I was responsible for specification,
analysis, design, coding, testing, implementation, customer education and sales support. All code was written in
TAL and extensive use was made of X.25 AM. I also designed and wrote firmware for a Z-80 based PCB, which drove
SCVF telex lines and acted as a modem for the Tandem-based system.
1978 - 1984
ITT Commercial Cable Company employed me initially as an analyst/programmer on a message-switch called ADX900,
written in assembler code and based on the Texas Instruments 990/10 processor. This was marketed to various companies,
mainly in the financial, legal and shipbroking business areas. It enabled these companies to send and receive large
volumes of telex messages. In the five years I worked with this company, I held various positions and carried out
many duties, including analysis, design coding and testing as well as providing pre- and post-sales support to
the marketing and sales departments. I designed and developed a new, smaller version of the ADX900 called the MINI,
of which over 50 were sold. All development work was carried out in assembler. When I left the company I was the
senior project manager and second in command of the software department.
1978 - 1978
Analyst/programmer with Olivetti, specifying and writing accounting programs for customers in the proprietary assembler
code, running on proprietary machines.
1976 - 1978
Trainee programmer then programmer with Thompson's Holidays, working on the reservations and accounting system
called TRACS, which was written in BAL, and based on an IBM 370/158 mainframe, using the OS/VS1 operating system.
1974 - 1976
Worked as a teacher for two years.
